Abandoned and ghostly, the little pavilions in the Necessidades are charming and Romantic as charred ruins. They must have been charming and romantic when first built, as a small zoo (!) for exotic animals. As the maligned stalls of the Bolhão, they are designed based on vernacular Architecture, but in a Classical manner – thought-out and detailed, placed symmetrically to each other and with similar proportions and elements. Note the mini thermal windows above the regular casements. Our favorite!
