An exuberant Northern Baroque portal in Ponte de Lima. The door surround itself would be vigorous enough, but the added split inverted pediment, curved and accentuated in perspective, and the oversized heraldry supported by the keystone of the arch really set it apart. Note how the mid level fascia returns to acknowledge the brutal mass of stone atop the door. Also note the beautiful, intricate and light ironwork gates which provide marvellous contrast.
