BATMAN | Old Portuguese Stuff

Coimbra Morcego
Not really sure what this little bas-relief means. People call the Coimbra students, and their countless imitators over the country, by their nickname of “morcegos” (bats). This is mostly due to their donning of body-covering black capes, a tradition which is disputedly connected with the Fascist period.

Wherever it comes from, today these bats are all over town, getting drunk on the streets and singing and shouting as they do every year, so this is for them. Enjoy!

Our own little bat sits with other modernist figurines as it decorates the portals to the Medical School at the 1940s campus of the University of Coimbra.

Alta de Coimbra.
