At the most picturesque viewpoint in Porto, a small triangular lot garden pores over the old town with its roofs and skylights. In 2012 it had 2 palm trees, now only stumps. Who knows how much longer the derelict tenements will keep their charm – these days they are hot property for a hotel, so most likely the timber sashes and French doors will be replaced by PVC units, walls colored with latex paint and the gently sloped roofs with some zinc-clad mansards to add another storey or two.
Depressing thought? Scandal? It just quietly happened last month on the other side of town, and we’ll post some images soon.
