One of the most incredible and underrated places, the Parque da Penha near Guimarães is a romantic garden built of a series of seemingly haphazardly placed boulders of enormous size. You can go under, over, around and between them for a richer-than-Richard-Serra-like experience as your perceptions of space and scale get continuously altered. Here stands also Marques da Silva’s church of Penha, which seems directly inspired by the huge stones over which it presides.
