STRAPWORK BULLSEYE

Amarante Window

A Mannerist bullseye window at the Church of São Gonçalo in Amarante. Another of its picturesque exterior features, it’s worth its own post here. Note the Flemish scrolls on the sides of the border and the circle corner ornaments. Its designer, the Portuguese or Galician Mateus Lopes, had clearly seen the works of Dietterlin and Vredeman de Vries so in vogue in the 16th c.
