The symbol of medieval architecture in the South of Portugal is this, the great keep of Beja. Bear in mind, its crisp appearance and perfect merlons and balconies are due to 19th century reconstructions and later Fascist cleaning-up. Regardless, it stands as a medieval monument of incredible scale and presence.
