Porto simple office

According to the map, these are the Porto corporate offices for a pizza franchise. We could hardly tell, and that’s for the better. What is the giant duct coming out of the window? And is it a full height space, or several stories with floor to ceiling windows?

Fully Estado Novo in character, its classical proportions meet modernist windows and detailing. It’s a hybrid that really belongs to its time, a freak. But we love the bizarre, and this is no exception. Favorite bits: the classical entablature with block modillions, the stone coursing, and of course the way the massive door frame consciuosly breaks through the window wall.

And last but not least: those details – window muntins, door grates, stone surrounds – minimal as they are, are nonetheless what gives the building scale and makes it blend into its surroundings, in spite of the bulk of its mass and eccentric façade.
