The chapel of the Prado do Repouso cemetery is surprisingly lively inside. If the exterior is frugal and austere, the interiors are decorated and colorful with plasterwork molded, gilded and faux-painted to resemble all different combinations of materials.
This always within a Neoclassical framework of order and hierarchy in composition, accented by the dark trim lines. Note also how the medallions in the vesica piscis shape translate into the mirrored “skylight windows” on the ribbed ceiling (which is painted to look like marble) and the petals in the floor pattern repeat at the door transom.
The floating choir gallery above the door, the giant window now gone and the windows at the clerestory and the ceiling give it an added feeling of 19th c. technological sofistication, somewhat like a quiet Jules Verne chapel.
