THE SUMMER FOLLY

Even more spectacular in this Palace at Benfica is the water fountain folly, used to cool everyone off during those hot Lisbon summers. The interior takes the azulejo-pebble-shell theme to another level, with an intricate pattern on the cupola more akin to embroidery than anything else. The fountains are alas deactivated but they had many spouts spewing water jets into the central pool. To access the folly you had to pass under the streams of water – great fun, and hard to come off unnoticed afterwards.
