THE REAL VINTAGE

PASTEIS DE BELEM

With all of Lisbon succumbing to the same trend of vintage labeling applied to franchise chain models, it’s refreshing to see the real thing: the little custard tart store in Belém, antechamber to the confectioner’s many tasting rooms and café spaces. The display cabinets and cupboards have been fitted with interior lighting, but otherwise they remain as original as on their first day. It’s also satisfying to see them so well-kept in brilliant paint, as the whole design really shines through – round corners everywhere, bulbous moldings and skinny brass rails on the bottom cabinets.
